In Sale and elsewhere in Victoria, a certificate of roadworthiness is required whenever a registered vehicle is being offered for sale - the seller of the vehicle must provide a current In Victoria, specifically in Sale and other areas, it is mandatory to have a roadworthiness certificate for any registered vehicle being put up for sale. If you plan to sell your vehicle, you are required to provide a current roadworthiness certificate to the prospective buyer, unless they are either your spouse or a licensed motor vehicle trader. 

This requirement aims to ensure the safety of the vehicle's new owner and other motorists on the road. Failure to comply with this regulation may lead to hefty fines and penalties. Thus, it is essential to obtain a roadworthy certificate from an accredited inspection station to facilitate a smooth and legal sale.

A vehicle can be sold without an RWC if it is not registered, however, before a used vehicle can be re-registered in Victoria an RWC is needed. In some cases a roadworthiness certificate is also needed to clear certain types of vehicle defect notices in Victoria. 

The vehicle must first pass a roadworthy inspection test undertaken by a suitably qualified mechanic at a licensed vehicle testing station. Provided a vehicle passes the inspection, a Roadworthy certificate is issued. A Roadworthy Certificate, or RWC, can only be issued by a licensed vehicle testing station such as Triple One Automotive in Sale. 

A roadworthy inspection covers the major safety related items, including:

An RWC is valid for 30 days from the date of issue.
